Area Description:

The typically French village of Marseillan Ville is a little gem nestling in the Southern coastal vineyards of Languedoc-Rousillon at the start of the Canal du Midi, which winds its way from the Mediterranean towards the Atlantic. Marseillan Ville is a small harbour set on a large sea water lagoon called the Bassin de Thau, which separates the village from the adjacent Mediterranean Sea. The lagoon, famous for oyster and mussel cultivation, also attracts many fishermen, windsurfers, sports sailors and flamingos alike!
Walking through this friendly medieval village you will immediately transcend into the typical charming Southern French village with its XVII Century stone town houses, once used for storing and producing wine from the local vineyards, Oleander lined streets and cafes and restaurants, many situated alongside the boats in the port. In the village, supplementing the street market and modern supermarché you will also find many specialist shops selling oysters and local wines to supplement your lunch or dinner.
Arriving at the Port of Marseillan Ville you will be reminded of what St. Tropez may have been like 30 or 40 years ago. This is where many visitors from the Canal du Midi boats moor up to spend the evening in the restaurants and cafés bordering the port. The famous ‘chais’ and showrooms of Noilly Prat can be found here as well as small antique ‘treasure’ shops. A rather grand XVII Century baroque mansion stands proudly by the port, built by the original architect of the Canal du Midi around 1680.
Marseillan Ville, dating back to the 6th Century BC, will take you back in time and will make your holiday most relaxing and memorable by catering to all of your senses.
There are 36 wine domaines in the near vicinity of Marseillan! They will welcome you with open arms – you can taste the wine on the premises and try out your French with a good chat about the best wines.

  • St. Guilhem le Desert (60 mins by car): hidden in the hills, this medieval village boasts one of the most splendid Abbeys in France.
  • Grotto of Clamouse (60 minutes by car): a visit to the nearby impressive and awe-inspiring Grotto of Clamouse will cool you down.
  • Roquefort (60 mins by car): the area where they all say cheese and where arguably the best and most famous cheese in the world is made…
  • Montpellier (40 mins by car or 30 mins by train): the beautiful Roman city for serious shoppers. A magical blend of the old and new with a great selection of Cinemas, Opera House and designer boutiques. If you have an urge for the big city vibes or want to ‘shop till you drop’, then this is the place to go.
  • Sete (30 min by car): located on top of an extinct volcano, Sete is the biggest fishing harbour on the Coast. It has wonderful views and boasts some of the best fish restaurants in the area.
Get your bike, paints or whatever…although a small village, Marseillan and its surrounding neighbours cater for all sports. Many painters also come here to capture the picturesque surroundings in the wonderful Mediterranean sunlight.

The villa is tucked away in a quiet residential area, beautifully equipped and decorated, outside areas aren’t overlooked. We needed total r and r, so we spent our mornings truffling local markets, returning with our spoils to read, sunbathe, swim before either cooking up said deliciousness or wandering slowly (I had a hip replacement three weeks later) to Marseillan and local taverns. We did go to the beach once, but we only had a week. Had we stayed longer than the oyster shacks of the Thau beckon. Derek and Lisa are perfect hosts, there if you need them but otherwise discreet. Great holiday

We had a great time at Villa Belles de Mai in Marseillan. Derek and Lise are lovely hosts; very friendly and helpful, with lots of good ideas and suggestions. The accommodation is very well appointed and spacious with all the equipment we needed and more! It is well located between Marseillan port and ‘old town’, and the beach – all are easy to get to on foot or by bike (we didn’t have the need to drive) and there is an excellent boulangerie and supermarket nearby. There are lots of lovely restaurants and bars – we enjoyed going out and also eating in – the property has a lovely courtyard dining area with an excellent barbecue. It was also great having the TV (with English channels) and DVD player, when the heat of the summer sun was too much!

Derek and Lisa are lovely and very accommodating hosts, and made us and our Labrador-Lucca – very welcome. The villa is a well equipped home from home…. With a pool! We had a great week of relaxing, exploring Marseillan… the port area is great, especially in the evening and just a short walk away, kept going back again and again. Marseillan Plage is a short drive away and is definitely a great place for a relaxing holiday !
