Vence
One of the most famous and beautiful, perched villages in the Cote D’Azur and has a wonderful artistic heritage with numerous galleries and shops, restaurants and street cafés. The village comes alive in the summer with its famous Festival and live concerts held in the open-air town square. Within the village walls there are cafés on the Place Clémenceau, a great spot to sit and watch activities of this busy square. A visit to the Matisse chapel, designed and decorated by the artist himself in the late 1940s, is recommended.
DAY TRIP IDEAS
Grasse (20km)
Grasse is famous worldwide for its perfumeries and is often hailed as the perfume capital of the world! It even has a museum of perfume. Grasse is a fascinating old town with pretty streets, squares full of life, numerous shops, restaurants, a daily market and a magnificent Cathedral. Grasse gets quite busy especially in August during the Fete du Jasmin where you can see floats driving through town throwing flowers into the crowd. Known as the Bataille de Fleurs (flower battle), onlookers get soaked by their natural perfume. During the event there are fireworks and dancing. If you are looking for something a little different why not visit the limestone caves and grottos leading up to the Plateau de Caussols, 4km north of Grasse.
Antibes (23km)
Antibes is a lovely old town with narrow winding streets, a great selection of restaurants, cafes, piano bars, private clubs, theatres and for art lovers the Picasso museum.
Juan Les Pins (23km)
Sitting next to Antibes is a very attractive coastal resort with gorgeous beaches, exciting nightlife with trendy night clubs, casino and also night shopping!
Nice (31km)
Glamourous and lively seaside city with a wide range of activities on offer from shopping in Nice’s chic pedestrian precinct, to wandering around the old town with its small shops, busy pubs, restaurants and its famous market. For those interested in history there is also plenty to do such as visiting Roman remains of Cimiez where a superb Jazz festival takes place in July. There are also a number of museums to discover (Matisse, Chagall, Palais Lascaris, Art museum MAMAC and many others). Why not go to the Parc Phoenix, a huge botanical greenhouse garden and zoo? In fact, it is one of the largest in Europe with six different tropical climates and thousands of plants to discover. Nice’s latest addition is the brand-new Promenade du Paillon a huge green zone covering twelve hectares and 1.2 kilometres long located in the heart of Nice with plants, trees, fountains and play areas. Nice has so much to offer so it is tricky narrowing it down but if you fancy an overview of Nice and see it as shown so often on photos then make your way to Mont Boron mountain which offers spectacular view points to the west over Nice harbour and the whole bay of Nice which is magnificent by day or by night when it is all lit up. To the east you will also have great views of St Jean Cap Ferrat peninsula and Monaco. There are lots of water sports along Nice coast and nearby coastal towns such as diving, parasailing, kayaking, paddle boarding, water skiing, inflatable riding, wake boarding and the latest craze – flyboarding. Why not hire bikes to ride along the Promenade des Anglais, or try rollerblading instead whilst enjoying the views of the bay and discover Nice in a brand-new way?
Cannes (37km)
